Charming. Elegant. Gorgeous. These are a few of several descriptive words mouthed daily about Lanciano. While many students describe Lanciano in words, a select few choose to reveal its beauty through photography. The photography class at CCI has been busy documenting the trip, and the beauty that surrounds us. Endless pictures of streets and the Italian culture fill our cameras.
On the first day the students learnt about the elements and principles of photography. Mr. Stephens explained to us the power of CFLTV, or rather, colour, form, line, texture and value. Next came the principles, which include; balance, emphasis, pattern, movement and contrast. Using our newfound knowledge, we were sent outside with an assigned item to photograph. The topics assigned ranged from rust to dead vegetation. Upon our return to the classroom we critiqued our pictures, and determined whether or not each picture was 'successful'.
Our second day of school was spent learning about the composition of photographs. The Rule of Thirds, radiant lines and symmetry were introduced to us. We were one again sent out into the streets of Lanciano to take pictures.
A dramatic collage consumed our time on the third day of classes. We were instructed to destroy 'beautiful National Geographic magazines' and create an image that had more than one depth, but included a central theme.
The fourth day of class was spent focusing on contrast between the elements. When we were sent out for this assignment, most students bee-lined it to the market that occurs on Wednesday mornings. The tables crowding the streets were covered in vibrant colours, many of which demonstrated contrast between one or more of the elements.
On the fifth and most recent day of class we built and took pictures of fake UFOs. The students used tin foil and bowls to build the fake UFOs, and attempted to take pictures that looked like UFO sightings.
As we are made speechless by the sprawling city of Lanciano, we can only hope to do it justice.
